April is Stress Awareness Month

I just found out that April is Stress Awareness Month. Have you felt a lot of stress lately? The world has been so chaotic the last few days, it makes me very stressed. Even if we already feel physical and mental stress, we also pile on more stress when pressed by external events.

Having chronic illnesses means that we have stress. Which comes first? That’s beyond my pay grade, but I know that I’m always feeling stressed. Ehlers Danlos is a disorder that keeps me in a state of fight or flight. That tension and stress can be felt in my muscles and brain. If I sit very still and focus on my muscles I can tell that I’m tied in knots.

When I focus this way, I let each muscle area go as limp as possible. Slowing my breathing while I try to relax each part of my body does reduce stress. It is always amazing to me how tense I really am. Have you tried this? What were your thoughts?
