Like many of you, housework and yard-work are rarely complete. In fact, at my house, the entire house has never been totally clean at the same time.

When hubby was stronger, we sometimes worked together to have the house clean-enough. Hubby does a few things, and wants to do more, but he gets very weak. I do what I can and pace myself more than I ever have before.
Our oldest has his back against the wall and needs our help. He’s been trying to organize his home for a year now, and it’s a huge job. After trying to do it all himself, he finally realized he needed help to complete the project.
When I sit in my recliner in pain, I know that I don’t need to do any housework today. That’s how I feel most days, but I do try and do a few chores. Here and there, I’m able to stand living in this house. Even though the place is often untidy, the clutter gets put in place as much as possible.
As a mom, when my kids need help, I will put myself in constant misery to help them. i will do what I can’t really do, because I’m a mom. Here’s how I do it:
Create a safe environment
- Wear appropriate clothing – shorts, t-shirt, and supportive shoes
- Our son turns the air cooler than he wants to
- He provides me plenty of cold soda and water and has lunch ready
- Box fans travel with me around the room
- The sofa has a fan aimed right at me, for the many breaks
Don’t Look in the Mirror
- Because of dysautonomia, my body can not regulate temperature properly. For this reason my hair becomes a ball of frizz. It does no good to try and make it look good.
- Don’t bother with make-up, for the same reason above. I will definitely sweat it off.
- Don’t wear nice clothes. Because my wrists are suffering with Avascular Necrosis, they throb when I do nothing. As they get worse during the day, I make more of a mess and spill things.
Rest, Rest, Rest
- I can’t say this enough. Some days I need a rest five minutes after arriving.
- My rest periods may last a long time, so I bring a book on my phone. Usually I can’t even hold my phone. I just lay down with my arms hanging down.
- If I fall asleep, that’s okay.
Because I’m a Mama Bear, Watch Out
- When my babies need me, get out of my way. I know that’s funny, but I’m an old-school mom, and I really feel this way.
- Realize this isn’t sustainable, but I’ll push myself for short spurts of time.
- Only give advice when asked. The worst thing I can do to my adult children is be pushy. Sure, I have opinions. But, it’s their house!
When the Breaks No Longer Help, It’s Time to Go Home
- As with all my activities, pacing is the number one thing!
- When I’m too tired to eat and drink, that’s it.
I always do these chores out of love and am thankful that God will help me. I know my chair will be ready for me to sit in and work. Good luck with your work, too!
